Biggest ever Prime Day 2021 with small business and charity winners

It turns out that pandemic, shops reopening and everything else that’s being going on in the world hasn’t dented our appetite for an online shopping event with Prime Day 2021 ending up being the biggest two-day period ever for Amazon’s third party sellers globally, nearly all of which are small and medium-sized businesses, growing even more than Amazon’s retail business.

Prime members in 20 countries shopped more during Prime Day 2021 than any previous Prime Day and took advantage of deep discounts across home, fashion, beauty, electronics and more. Prime members purchased more than 250 million items worldwide and saved more than any Prime Day before.

It also turns out we are suckers for free cash with more consumers than ever before spending a tenner with a small business in the two weeks before Prime Day in order to get a free £10 coupon to spend on Prime Day. At the same time, charities did well with people signing up to AmazonSmile in their droves, which results in a donation every time they shop on Amazon in the future.

“For the first time this Prime Day, we offered a double donation promotion through our charity initiative AmazonSmile, which saw more UK customers shopping through AmazonSmile than ever before. This year, Prime Day has also been good news for small businesses, with even more customers than last year taking advantage of our ‘Spend £10, Get £10’ promotion, providing a much-needed boost to small business sellers across the country.”
– John Boumphrey, Amazon UK Country Manager

Globally, customers spent over $1.9 billion on more than 70 million small business products during the promotional period in the run up to Prime Day 2021, more than a 100% year-on-year increase on sales compared to the Prime Day October 2020 promotion.

AmazonSmile, an initiative launched in the UK in 2017 which enables Amazon customers to support their favourite charity at no extra cost to the customer or charity, doubled its donations this Prime Day in the UK. As an added bonus for Prime members who activated AmazonSmile in the free Amazon Shopping App between 2nd – 22nd June, Amazon increased the donation rate to 5% on the first qualifying Prime Day purchase to the customer’s chosen charity – 10x the regular donation rate. Thanks to these promotions, this Prime Day saw more UK customers than ever before shopping through AmazonSmile.

There should be no surprise that the Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote was the most popular item purchased during Prime Day globally and in the UK with customers purchasing more Fire TV 4K streaming media players globally on Prime Day this year than any previous Prime Day. Normally £49.99, it was on offer for £26.99 and if you used your £10 coupon then it could be snagged for an amazingly low £16.99 and that quite frankly really was a bargain!

Other top selling deals in the UK included the Shark Anti Hair Wrap Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner, CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser and Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey.

We’re now looking forward to the next major UK shopping event – Black Friday week and if Amazon repeat their small business offer of a free tenner make sure you don’t miss out!
